One of CloudNow’s clients is a US-based road safety training provider. The client wished to develop an application which could be rolled out to all users, with the objective of improving driving safety results with integrated gamification.
Data capture for analysis
The client partnered with a third-party service provider, Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), who would receive raw data from registered mobile phone gyrometers and accelerometers. This data would then be processed to generate insightful information about these registered users.
A meaningful application for this mobile sensor data is in analyzing the way people drive, given the location, acceleration and orientation data captured from a phone traveling from point A to point B.
The client wished to create an application through which users could engage with this data and improve their road safety. CloudNow partnered with the client to deliver an iOS and Android app that made use of the processed data from CMT to do exactly this.
Digital interface
CMT’s AI/ML algorithms process the mobile sensor data and return it to their mobile SDK. The new app built by CloudNow gives the user an interface to interact with this data, giving them a window into how safely they are driving, how often they drive rashly, average and high speeds, to name a few data points shared via the app.
Gamification
Leveraging the competitive spirit to generate better outcomes, the app acts as a social platform for multiple family members or friends to form user groups. The CMT SDK provides star ratings and scores for individual trips, scores for each parameter, and 14-day aggregate scores for each user. The members of the user group can compare scores on the leaderboard and points system, motivating users to perform, and building enthusiasm.
Social learning
Support, advice and training from peers and trusted loved ones can help reinforce lessons learned. On the app, responsible family members or parents can act as ‘Mentors’ to multiple ‘Drivers’. The Mentor can set individual goals for each Driver, track the scores and check whether or not set goals have been achieved. This involvement of the peer group in the learning process creates a sense of accountability and thus improves learning outcomes.
Training content
Using the principles of adaptive learning, each user on the app travels a unique learning path that suits their needs and awareness level. Aggregate scores are assigned to each Driver based on data gathered, and appropriate driver safety training content is sent to each individual based on their score level.
With group-specific leaderboards and close interaction with mentors, the social aspect of the application boosts the speed at which training outcomes are achieved.
Applying the principles of gamification, social and adaptive learning, CloudNow worked with the client and CMT to create meaningful, actionable insights and drive real change. Since the app uses live data, any improvement or worsening of driving quality is immediately brought to the attention of the mentor.
