Digital Transformation in the Learning & Development function

Learning and Development (L&D) is undergoing a massive transformation and driving competitiveness for companies across industries.

A report by business applications provider CGS says that 74% of employees are ready to learn new skills to remain employable in the future, and that companies must prioritize L&D initiatives for their current and future workforce. The report also says that employees are interested in having both technical and leadership training more readily available in the workplace.

Companies recognize the need for constant upskilling too, and e-learning today plays an increasingly important role in the delivery of L&D programs to employees. The pandemic has further fueled the need for the adoption of digital practices.

In fact, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in Central London found that during the course of the pandemic, 75% of companies say they have moved some or all of their L&D training online.

Key factors to plan digital-first L&D

  1. As digital transformation in the learning & development function pushes ahead, training leaders  say smart-technology driven interactive online learning is the way forward. An important foundation on which to build this digital focus is to deploy a modern Learning Management System (LMS).
  2. Then there is the learning content being delivered through the LMS. As technology evolves, increasingly rich content formats – including AR & VR, video simulations, and more – are available to make learning more effective. There is also a trend towards smaller, bite-sized learning offering the best solution for employee skilling.
  3. Immersive learning solutions such as personalized learning options, and gamification are other initiatives to adopt. Blended learning, virtual instructor-led training (VILT), and eLearning programs also enhance L&D. A newer trend emerging is social learning, where employees are encouraged to learn from each other through social media and knowledge collaboration tools.
  4. And finally, the most important factor of all. Whatever the route your company takes, the destination is the same – business growth. It is vital for L&D initiatives to be aligned to the digital transformation goals of the company as a whole. Companies need to chalk out clear goals for training programs, and make sure they are aligned to business goals.
